How to Use the Amazon Character Counter
- 1. Select the Amazon listing field. Choose the preset that matches what you're writing — title, bullet, description, item highlight or backend search terms.
- 2. Paste or write the content. Type directly or paste from your existing listing. The counter updates on every keystroke.
- 3. Review the character count, remaining space and warnings. The progress bar turns amber near the limit and red when you exceed it. Title mode also surfaces Amazon-specific style warnings.
Characters vs Bytes in Amazon Search Terms
Characters and bytes are not always the same thing. Amazon measures backend search terms in bytes, not characters — and a single character can take up more than one byte depending on the alphabet and symbols used.
In UTF-8, standard English letters, digits and basic punctuation use exactly 1 byte each. Accented characters (é, ñ, ü) use 2 bytes. Most CJK characters (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) use 3 bytes. Emoji and many special symbols use 4 bytes.
This tool calculates actual UTF-8 bytes when you select the Search Terms preset, so you always see the true remaining space Amazon will enforce.
How to Write an Amazon Product Title
- Put the brand and main product information early — shoppers scan the first 60 characters on mobile.
- Prioritize important customer-facing keywords over long lists of variations.
- Avoid keyword stuffing and repeated words. Amazon may suppress listings that read as spammy.
- Avoid promotional claims like "best seller", "sale", "free shipping" or "#1" — these are prohibited in titles.
- Avoid unnecessary symbols such as !, ?, $, ~, ^, *. Stick to letters, numbers, hyphens and standard punctuation.
- Keep the title readable on mobile — front-load benefits and specs a buyer needs to make a decision.
Amazon Character Counter FAQ
What is the Amazon product title character limit?
For most US categories, Amazon product titles are limited to 75 characters. Some categories allow more or less — always verify the current requirement in your category's style guide in Seller Central.
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes. Amazon counts spaces as characters in titles, bullet points and descriptions. Our counter shows both totals — characters with spaces and without — so you can see the exact impact of formatting.
What is the difference between characters and bytes?
A character is a single visible symbol, while a byte is the underlying unit Amazon uses to measure backend search terms. In UTF-8, plain ASCII letters use 1 byte, but accented letters, symbols and emoji can use 2, 3 or 4 bytes each. This tool measures actual UTF-8 bytes for search terms.
How many bytes can Amazon backend search terms contain?
Amazon backend search terms are typically capped at 250 bytes total across the field. Because non-ASCII characters use more than one byte, the visible character count can be lower than 250.
Can Amazon character limits vary by category?
Yes. Categories such as apparel, grocery, books and beauty may enforce different title lengths or bullet formatting rules. Marketplaces (US, UK, DE, JP, etc.) also differ. Use Seller Central's category style guide as the source of truth.
Does the tool save or upload my listing text?
No. All counting happens locally in your browser. Your text is not uploaded, shared or stored on any server. A copy may be saved to your own browser's local storage so you can return to your draft, and you can clear it any time with the Clear button.
